New State Law on Phones & Smartwatches in Schools
California lawmakers passed the Phone-Free Schools Act (AB 3216) in 2024. Signed by Governor Gavin Newsom, the legislation strengthens existing education code by requiring public schools to implement comprehensive policies limiting or prohibiting student use of mobile phones during the school day effective July 1, 2026.
CVUSD will work with families, staff, and students throughout the 2025–26 school year to develop a policy that:
Supports student learning and focus
Promotes well-being and positive school climate
Respects family communication needs
We’ll ask for input throughout the fall through surveys, forums, and school meetings. Our first Thoughtexchange and survey will launch next week - please keep an eye out and take a few minutes to participate. Your input is essential as we build this policy together.
